The other day, my reader Suzanne commented on my post about how thinking strategically about your clothes can save you time, money, and frustration. She mentioned that shopping for basics seemed boring and less exciting to her. That got me thinking.
I shop for tops frequently since the Singaporean climate is too warm for sweaters, jackets, and other heavy clothing. But here’s the thing: shopping for tops, even basics, can be fun. My approach is to look for exciting, well-designed tops in good fabrics that can work as basics too.
Using Tops as Basics Under Jackets and as Standalone Fashion Pieces
Instead of seeking plain basics, I opt for tops that stand out. One of my favorite shops for this is Alldressedup. They offer tops made from high-quality fabrics like silk, and each piece always has an interesting design element.
Examples of Basics with a Twist
Here are some examples of tops that look pretty basic from the front, making them perfect for wearing under blazers and jackets. However, when you see them from the back, they all have unique design elements that make them fashionable enough to wear on their own.
Purple Silk Top
This purple silk top from Alldressedup appears basic in the front, but the back features crossovers and drapes. It would look great paired with a grey pantsuit.
Silk Pink Top
Another silk top from Alldressedup, following the same concept. It’s straightforward on the front, making it suitable to wear with a black suit or blazer. The back, however, is glamorous when worn alone.
Black Silk Top
This black silk top from Alldressedup also makes for a great basic with its detachable belt. You could tuck it into a skirt or pants and wear it with a blazer. On its own, it’s a fantastic top with an appealing back design.
White Cotton Zara Top
Even this basic shirt from Zara can serve as a plain layer under jackets. Yet, it remains interesting on its own due to the unique buttons at the back.
Enjoy the Versatility of Great Tops!
What I love about these types of tops is their versatility. They work as standalone pieces in the summer and can be worn under jackets or cardigans in the winter. They’re perfect year-round wardrobe assets!
What do you think? Is this a good idea, or do you prefer your basics to be just plain and simple?
