Fashion Muse: Diane Keaton – Advocate of the Dandy Look

While Katherine Hepburn may have initiated the menswear-inspired trend, Diane Keaton popularized and mainstreamed it with her iconic role as Annie Hall in the movie of the same name. I’m genuinely impressed by how gracefully Diane Keaton continues to age and maintain her fabulous sense of style. It’s definitely time to recognize her as a style icon!

Born Diane Hall in 1946, Diane Keaton rose to fame with her role as Kay Adams-Corleone in “The Godfather.” However, it was her series of films with Woody Allen that cemented her status as a leading lady. One of her most memorable fashion moments is her dandy look with a large tie in “Annie Hall.”

The film “Annie Hall” is said to reflect her real-life relationship with Woody Allen, and Diane herself was instrumental in choosing the film’s wardrobe, collaborating with Ruth Morley and Ralph Lauren. Her style in the movie—featuring men’s ties, suits, and fedora hats—quickly became a trend among women.

Over the years, Diane has starred in numerous films and has continued to work well past her forties. She also enjoys writing, singing, and photography in her free time, even publishing a book of hotel interior photographs in 1980.

Interestingly, the film “Something’s Gotta Give,” where she starred alongside Jack Nicholson, almost wasn’t produced because studios considered the actors too old for a romantic role. Thankfully, the film was made and proved to be a massive success, showing that audiences do want to see mature romance represented on screen.

What do you think of Diane Keaton? Is she one of your style icons too?
