Suzanne has been a long-time reader of my blog, and I always appreciate her thoughtful comments. Sometimes she sends me something special, like this quote from Miuccia Prada:
“Women always try to tame themselves as they get older but the ones who look the best are often a bit wilder. Thinking about age all the time is the biggest prison women can make for themselves.”
Suzanne wrote, “I feel that this is what you teach us with the bright colors and different shapes of your clothes.” I couldn’t be happier to read that, as it’s exactly the message I aim to share through this blog.
Have fun as you age. Enjoy fashion. Wear more color. Try new things. Celebrate your unique style.
Inspired by the beautiful women of Advanced Style, I plan to become wilder and more colorful with my clothes as I get older. I want to embrace hats and gloves like the Style Crone, wear colorful glasses like Iris Apfel and Rita Ellis, and express my creativity like Debra Rapoport. I might even dye my hair a crazy color and have as much fun as Ilona Royce-Smithkin and wear makeup like Beatrice Ost. Lynn Dell encourages us to “try something new,” and I love her advice to “accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative.”
It’s true that I’m not doing all these things yet, and maybe I never will. But yesterday, I sat in a room full of older people, most of them looking somber and wearing shapeless clothes. They might have thought I was a bit crazy, wearing my bright green pants, red top, and yellow shoes. I definitely stood out.
But I believe I also brought a few smiles to people’s faces by brightening up the room. Bright colors or unique clothes often get comments and smiles, and they can lift your mood as well as others’. I’m taking baby steps now, and maybe by the time I’m 90, I’ll be as colorful and charismatic as any of those amazing ladies.
Let’s share a few manifestos with the world! Inspired by these wonderful women, I’ve created some manifestos for us older women. Share them to spread the positive message about aging! Tweet them, share them on Facebook, and pin them! Also, do you have any other good ideas for manifestos? I’d love to create more! And tell me, do you intend to get wilder as you age?
