Navigating the Fashion Conundrum: Stick to a Signature Look or Explore Bold New Trends?

Iconic style figures like Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn are known for their timeless elegance. They kept it simple, with clean lines and iconic accessories—think Jackie O’s sunglasses or Audrey Hepburn’s shawls. I’m a huge fan of both.

In style books I’ve read recently, there’s a recurring theme of women with a few high-quality pieces that they wear often. These women have a defined signature style and an air of elegance and class, which I really admire.

On the other hand, I also adore women like Iris Apfel and the ladies from Advanced Style, who have unforgettable, bold styles and are always experimenting with new looks.

Here’s my style dilemma: While I admire the idea of a classy, minimalist wardrobe with a clear signature look—like dressy pants with a chic asymmetrical top—I’m always drawn to something new and different. I love exploring various fashion trends and styles, making it hard to stick to just one.

This constant experimentation means I might not always look stylish, and some outfits might even be fashion disasters in hindsight. As I age, I find myself wanting to take more risks with my wardrobe, which conflicts with the minimalist elegance often recommended by style experts.

Yet, there are days when I feel like embracing a minimalist approach—focusing on basics and enhancing them with special accessories to keep it elegant and chic, which feels more genuine to my nature.

Should you consider this an issue? Maybe not. If you prefer consistency, opting for a chic and elegant route might be best. But if you enjoy the thrill of experimenting, embrace it. Fashion should be fun.

Personally, I’m not ready to commit to one consistent style. I’ll continue to mix spontaneous purchases with thoughtfully planned basics to create a versatile wardrobe. Essentially, I’m a minimalist who enjoys unique details and is always drawn to new trends. I wonder if I’ll ever settle on just one style.

Ultimately, our style will keep evolving, which is great because fashion should be creative and exciting. It’s important to understand yourself, your body, and choose clothes that reflect your personality. You don’t need to stick rigidly to a ‘safe and elegant’ label. When you understand key aspects of your personal style, you can go with the flow more easily.

I’d love to hear from you! Do you have a clearly defined style, or do you hop from one style to another? How important is having a cohesive style for you?
