If you’re thinking about getting some flared pants, I’ve got great tips on how to wear them, along with three different styles to show you. During my stay in New York, I did quite a bit of thrift shopping (still planning to write more about that). I’ve been hunting for flared pants to replace my old white sailor ones for some time now.
I usually don’t search for pants in thrift or consignment shops because I prefer finding fancier items there. However, this shop was small, and these pants caught my eye immediately. They matched my requirements for white pants: stretchy, not too thin, had pockets, were flared, and were my size. They were from Theory, a brand well-known in the US, which I’ve bought other items from before.

I felt these pants were meant for me because they fit perfectly. I was with some readers from 40+ style at the time, and they all agreed I had to buy them. It was an easy decision since they were very affordable.
I wore them as soon as I could. When fashion week began, the weather had cooled down, making it perfect for wearing pants. Though I didn’t have any fashion shows to go to, I was meeting Jamie and later attending a special gathering with Garance Doré. I wanted an outfit that was comfortable all day, not too attention-grabbing, yet still stylish.
I paired the pants with a summer top from Stella Carakasi and a very old denim stretch jacket. The finishing touch was a new necklace and earrings I had bought earlier at a street fair from independent designer AC Agates, who creates exquisite handmade jewelry.
How To Wear Flared Pants
Here are a few tips for wearing flared pants, especially those not super tight at the top:
1. Make sure they fit well around your waist and bottom. You don’t want them to be too baggy there.
2. You can choose pants tightly fitted around the upper legs, like my Paige flared jeans, or go for a more relaxed fit, skimming the skin like the white pants.
3. Ensure your top isn’t too long. Highlighting that your pants fit tightly at the top makes the look more streamlined, lengthening, and flattering.
4. Flared pants look best with pointy heels. Both my white and blue jean flares are too long to wear with flats, so they almost hit the ground when worn with heels. Don’t think you can’t wear flared pants if you’re short—they can be very lengthening if you follow these tips.
5. For even more of a lengthening illusion, wear pointy shoes in a color similar to your pants.

Paired with my Paige flared jeans, which I got in Vancouver, they fit perfectly and make my legs look really long. They’re just the right height when worn with heels. I like these jeans with short tailored blazers. You can either tuck in your tops or wear a short top underneath.
