What Was I Thinking? Tips to Steer Clear of Expensive Purchase Regrets

I’m sure you’ve wondered at some point how to avoid making buying mistakes. Most women have made a few slip-ups when shopping, but the key is to minimize or even eliminate those errors. So, how can you do that?

First, it helps to understand your personal style. You might want to jot down the main elements of your style either on a notepad or in your phone. Before heading out to shop, review this list to remind yourself of what you’re looking for.

For example, my key style elements are:
– Unique pieces
– Asymmetry
– Colors
– Natural fabrics
– Comfort
– A fun touch

It’s also useful to make a list of what definitely isn’t your style, and stick to it. My “no-go” list includes:
– Bohemian
– Girly
– Romantic
– Unflattering
– Synthetic fabrics
– Boring
– Difficult to wear

If you’re tempted by something that doesn’t fit your style, refer back to your “no-go” list and avoid items that have these elements.

Going through my own closet, I can see that many of my buying mistakes included elements from my “not my style” list. These items turned out to be uncomfortable, unflattering, or just boring. Don’t buy something just because it fits and looks ‘nice.’ Your new pieces should be better than what’s already in your wardrobe, or you likely won’t wear them.

So do yourself a favor and create your own style lists before shopping. Get clear on your style to ensure you only buy things that suit you!
