Recently, I talked about Diana Vreeland’s idea that “Style is something you’re born with, you don’t acquire it.” That seems a bit harsh. Does it mean you can’t be stylish if you don’t have an innate knack for it? I think while it might be more of a challenge, anyone can achieve a stylish look with a bit of effort and some useful tips.
Here are my top 15 tips for looking effortlessly stylish, even if it feels like a lot of work:
1. If you’re not sure about your style, start simple. High-quality, minimalist clothes in classic colors always look stylish. Once you’re comfortable, you can experiment more.
2. Build a wardrobe with essentials that fit well and suit many occasions.
3. Stick to trusted color combinations like black and white, navy and white, or cream and camel.
4. Always have a pair of well-fitting jeans; they go with everything.
5. Invest in dresses. They’re one-piece outfits that don’t require matching tops and bottoms. A simple shift dress in a good fabric can always be dressed up with some jewelry.
6. Measure your body to understand your shape. Wearing the wrong clothes for your body type can look unflattering.
7. Know your vertical body type to balance your proportions, which is a big step towards a great outfit.
8. Grooming matters. Well-manicured nails and toes add to a stylish look.
9. Get a great haircut that suits your face shape. A good haircut can make a huge difference.
10. Don’t overlook accessories. They can transform even simple outfits. Start simple and add more as you get comfortable.
11. Choose clothes that reflect your personality. You’ll feel better in them and look more stylish.
12. Add a signature piece to your outfit, whether it’s a scarf, hat, or belt. This personal touch makes your style unique.
13. Read style books to understand the basics. They can be really helpful.
14. Once you’re comfortable with a minimalist style, start experimenting with patterns, colors, and different silhouettes to see what works for you.
15. Follow style blogs or websites for daily tips and inspiration to help you look and feel your best.
